Richard Brown and I (Peo Orvendal) met the first team (Walter Jaccard, Joe Radosevic and Mark Tourtellot) in Port Townsend, helped them unload their gear, and load ours. We then drooled over the blueprints of the Governor while waiting for the time to leave the dock. We couldn't have been met by better conditions. Only small wind waves, the sun was shining and a mellow tidal exchange. The buoy was still in place, and after Mike had cleared us with the vessel traffic control, Richard and I geared up, jumped in the water with our doubles, a 70' bottle, an O2 bottle and a scooter each. We held on to the current line hanging off the buoy while doing some quick bubble checks. |

We departed Mukilteo around 11 am. Predicted slack was not until 3:30 pm, but we wanted lots of time to "hook" the wreck, as we had no interest in scootering the bottom of Admiralty Inlet (been there, done that). Hooking a deep wreck in a high flow area is always a challenge. You guess how much to go upstream of the wreck, drop the hook and then drift back over the wreck, hoping the hook hits the bottom at the right time. It usually takes multiple attempts. We had brought Kevin Connell with us, however, who has an uncanny ability to guess these things, and were successful on our second attempt. |

September 23, 2001: On Sunday, September 23, SCRET put a team of divers on the stern section of the Bunker Hill, a T-2 oil tanker which sank at the south end of Rosiaro Strait in 1964. The stern section is lying upside down on the bottom (with the bottom of the hull pointing up towards the surface). We grappeled the wreck at the end where the break occurred. The ship appears to have come apart at a bulkhead, because, while we saw lots of jagged pieces of metal, we did not see large openings into the hull (which is what I expected). The massive propeller and rudder on the stern of the wreck are awesome sights. The hull is covered with an amazing amout of marine life. |
