SCRET Projects – Diamond Knot
The Diamond Knot was built during WWII by the United States Maritime Commission and was bareboat chartered to the Alaska Steamship Company as a cargo vessel.
History and general information :
- Length 338’, Beam 50’, Draft 18’, Gross Tonnage 5,525 T
- Loaded with over 7 million cans of salmon and other cargo of lumber, cannery equipment, 50,000 gallons of fish oil, a tugboat, an automobile, and 155 barrels of salt fish
- Cargo valued at over $3.5 million (1947 $’s)
- 14’ gash in the side
- Rests in 135’ at the entrance to Crescent Bay
On August 13, 1947, the Diamond Knot was headed for Seattle from Bristol Bay Ports of Alaska when it was rammed in the dense fog by the 10,681 ton Fenn Victory. The Knot was towed by the tugs Matilda Foss and Foss 21, but got caught broadside in the swift currents off Tongue Point Reef and went down.
One of the few wrecks SCRET dives that is also available to recreational divers
